Selecting a Communication Media

Recognising your communication objectives, audience needs and the environment in which they operate is key to selecting an appropriate communication media.

Consider some of the points below when deciding whether a form of print, electronic, or a combination of both, may be right for your technical communication needs.

Considerations

  • Does the audience have access to computers and/or the Internet?

  • Are the audience comfortable with using computers and/or the Internet?

  • What are the physical locations of the audience?

  • Will the audience read through documentation or are they likley to be more visually-minded?

  • Will the information need to be updated regularly?

  • Who will be responsible for updating the information?

  • How often will the audience refer to the information?

  • Will this be the only source of the information for the audience?

  • What is the impact if electronic information is unavailable due to technical fault?

  • Are the costs of physical printing a potential barrier?
